The following are letters to my daughter, Ellie, who was born premature, 4 months too early. They document her many months stay in the NICU, her trials, and the emotional struggles of her mother and I.

The Chrome Womb
Leah visited this past Sunday and brought her own little Eleanor. She technically wasn't allowed to come in, but we made it work, anyway. Leah said that she imagined the NICU would be silver on the interior, and it made me imagine some kind of high-tech chrome womb. I rather like that description. Why? Because that is what I imagine it looks like to YOU whenever you peer out from your isolette across a NICU, bathed in light.
